WSS works in conjunction with Western Surgical Skills Network to deliver high quality surgical education through the support and involvement of senior consultants and trainees.
Much of the teaching is led by SRMOs giving them the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and learning to be effective teachers, a key skill to being a surgeon.
All education sessions are open to all trainees within the network regardless of their training level. If you're interested in joining or would like more information, please email
For Trainees:

Having commenced in 2019 and continued in 2020, SET Info Night is presented by recently successful SET applicants and Senior Consultants giving valuable inside information to what makes a good SET application in General Surgery.
This includes how to maximise your CV points, building up your referee support and the process of submitting an application.
Dates to be announced soon
In February of 2020, an inaugural Mentoring Program started between Registrars and SRMOs. The purpose of this program is to help guide and prepare SRMOs for the future role of a SET trainee.
Mentors and mentees run regular sessions at their own discretion covering various topics depending on the goals of the mentees. For example: SET interview practice, research or overall how to achieve a good work-life balance.
This program is led by SRMOs aimed at PGY 1 and PGY 2 trainees with an interest in surgery. Senior Consultants, Fellows and SET trainees also participate and teach many of the sessions.
Each session runs weekly on Wednesday evenings, covering basic surgical knowledge and skills expected of junior doctors and aims at forming foundation work for junior doctors transitioning into the SRMO role.
Sessions are a combination of theory/case based learning as well as practical sessions.
